چکیده

1. Primates meet their nutritional goals by prioritizing certain nutritional parameters when choosing the types and quantities of different foods. 2. There are five major models applied in primate nutritional ecology, each of which proposes that diet selection subserves a different primary nutritional goal: (i) energy maximization; (ii) nitrogen (protein) maximization; (iii) avoidance or regulation of intake of plant secondary metabolites; (iv) limitations on the intake of dietary fibre; and (v) nutrient balancing. 3. Here, we review the evidence in support of each of these nutritional goals as drivers of primate diet selection. We discuss some of the costs and benefits associated with different methodological approaches used in primate nutritional ecology. 4. New approaches developed outside of primatology have provided better frameworks for understanding the nutritional goals of some primate species. We suggest that the field of primate nutritional ecology needs to take greater advantage of the techniques developed by nutritional ecologists working in other fields. 5. Specifically, we recommend (i) the increased application of the Geometric Framework for nutrition, (ii) the application of methodological approaches that enable the estimation of nutrient and energy availability from food sources, and (iii) continuous follows of individual primates in the wild for determining primary nutritional goals.

Urinary C-Peptide Measurement as a Marker of Nutritional Status in Macaques

Studies of the nutritional status of wild animals are important in a wide range of research areas such as ecology, behavioural ecology and reproductive biology. However, they have so far been strongly limited by the indirect nature of the available non-invasive tools for the measurement of individual energetic status. The measurement of urinary C-peptide (UCP), which in humans and great apes sh...

Chapter 7 Food as a Selective Force in Primates

PRIMATES MUST EAT to survive; the acquisition of food resources is thus among one of the most signifi cant selective pressures affecting their biology. The necessity of fi nding food to meet nutritional requirements must be balanced with avoiding predation and securing mates, and thereby infl uences primate physiology, ecology, activity, movement, and social relationships. All animals, includin...

Nutritional and feeding ecology in Cory’s shearwater Calonectris diomedea during breeding

In birds, parents adjust their feeding behaviour according to breeding duties, which ultimately may lead to seasonal adjustments in nutritional physiology and hematology over the breeding season. Although avian physiology has been widely investigated in captivity, few studies have integrated individual changes in feeding and physiological ecology throughout the breeding season in wild birds. To...

Title Digesta Passage Time, Digestibility, and Total Gut Fill in Captive Japanese Macaques (Macaca fuscata): Effects Food Type and Food Intake Level

19 Digestion is an important process in understanding the feeding ecology 20 of animals. We examined digesta passage time, digestibility, and total gut fill in 21 Japanese macaques (n = 4) under four diet conditions representing the seasonal 22 and regional variations in the diets of wild populations to determine the effects of 23 food type and food intake on these digestive features. Food type...

YEARBOOK OF PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY 34:283-321 (1991) Stable Isotope Analyses in Human Nutritional Ecology

Extracting nutrients is of upmost importance to the survival of any individual or species. One of the distinguishing characteristics of the order Primates is the vast range of nutritional adaptations it exhibits. Within our own species all manner of adaptations are practiced and it has been a major focus of research to determine when and where these various patterns originated. We present one m...
